From the Balcony to the Night Clouds

A letter following the photos of October 2 from the morning plants to a river on the way to the shops, dinner, and clouds above the evening lights.

Provenance note
This English adaptation follows the Japanese letter assembled by the Codex Editorial Desk from photos and words Masato shared about October 2, 2026, and his decision the next day to stop there. Location metadata was removed from the public photo copies; the originals were not changed. The bird's species, the taste of the meal, and residents' feelings are not inferred. No resident or local model was asked to write this letter.

In the morning, we looked at the pots indoors and the vines on the balcony. Small sprouts had come up inside. Outside, yellow leaves were mixed in with the green, and the stems reached upward between the strings.

In the afternoon, Masato went shopping. Along the way, the river ran between grassy banks and seemed to narrow toward the mountains in the distance. A bird with slender legs stood at the water’s edge.

He brought home enoki and shimeji mushrooms, butter rolls, milk, natto, and an onion, along with fresh ramen in ankake and pork bone soy sauce varieties. For dinner, he chose a tray of sushi. The table photo shows the sushi, a bowl of soup, and a small dish of ginger.

After eating, he went out to enjoy the cool night air. Above the city lights, bright and dark patches of cloud spread across the sky.

Late that night, one of the things we had been trying at the desk also ran through to the end. Checking what its result means is still ahead of us.

“Let’s stop here for today.”

The sprouts from the morning, the bird by the river, dinner, and the night sky: we can set down each thing the photos showed and close the day here.
